Разборки с Adaptec: Array disappeared while rebuilding
реклама
Hello, support.
Now I have a really serious trouble. I was migrating RAID-0 of 5 WD1000FYPS drivers to RAID0 of 6 drives and during this process array have disappeared. Server continue to work fine, but i lost logical drive. All physical drives looks like normal, but empty ones and after reboot i have the error message (see the attachment). Array if full of data, so it's critical to restore it.
And that's the screenshot of ACU.

I found the cause of the problem: 1 HDD is dead.
Is there any way to recover the data?

I have bought one more HDD and replaced the burned electronics, so that drive is on line again. But the controller prints the same error and does not want to rebuild my array. Is there any disaster recovery method, like reading configuration from drives?
Response
Hello from Adaptec,
this is in answer to your question regarding the Adaptec 31605 SAS RAID controller.
As a Raid 0 is not redundant, if you are loosing one drive in the array, all the data will be lost, also on the other drives. The only solution in this case is to use a backup of the data, and reconfigure a new array.

Hello, support.
Before creating the "сombat" system I have few experiments with the controller - it was able to pick up an array even after hot unpluging drives and connecting to the different ports.
But now the crash was during raid level migration...
I suppose that any array is the most vulnerable during raid level migration, even if there is fault tolerant level (ex. RAID-5 -> RAID6). And any emergency situation during this operation (like power fail or 1 HDD fault) is catastrophic?
Response
Hello from Adaptec,
yes, it is true, a migration / or an expand / is the most difficult and critical thing to do with a Raid controller. If a power fail or HDD fault occurs, it is then very difficult to get the data back. So, it is highly recommended to backup everything before to start with such an operation.
Customer
So, if the fault occured during array modification, the fact that now I have all HDD's with data in good order does not help?
Response
Hello from Adaptec,
theoretically yes. However, most of the time, when you have such an issue, then several drives have been kicked off the array. It that case, it is possible to try to get the drives back to the array, but most of the time it won´t help to get the data back.
